Entrance to the windmill complex is €10 for adults, and the windmills are open for exploration from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM daily.

Here, we were able to learn about the history and function of the windmills, as well as the broader role of water management in Dutch culture. We loved the interactive displays, which gave us a deeper understanding of the engineering brilliance behind these historic structures.

The museum also had detailed exhibits about the lives of the people who lived and worked here, providing a window into the daily struggles and triumphs of the past. We spent a good couple of hours here, and we felt like we walked away with a renewed appreciation for the ingenuity and perseverance of the Dutch people. Museum admission is included in the windmill ticket price.

Practical Information for Visitors

If you're planning a trip to Kinderdijk, there are a few practical things to keep in mind. Kinderdijk is located about 15 kilometers from the city of Dordrecht and can be easily reached by car or public transport. Once there, we recommend taking a boat tour to see the windmills from a different perspective. The boat ride lasts about an hour, and it's a wonderful way to experience the peaceful beauty of the area while learning more about its history. Boat tours cost around €7 per person.

Additionally, be sure to bring comfortable shoes as you'll be walking quite a bit on the narrow paths alongside the canals. If you're visiting during the peak summer months, we recommend arriving early in the day to avoid crowds. And for those looking to experience the area without the tourists, we suggest visiting during the off-peak seasons, when the windmills are just as magical but less crowded.
