Well hidden in the heart of the Atacama Desert in Chile, this surreal landscape will make you feel like you’ve stepped onto the surface of the moon without ever leaving Earth. Ready to embark on a spacey journey?

Get To Valley of the Moon

You can get to Valley of the Moon by car, bike, or tour from San Pedro de Atacama, the nearest city at 13 kilometers (8 miles). The main entrance to Valley of the Moon is well-marked and located along the road from San Pedro de Atacama, keep an eye on signs directing you to the entrance as you approach. Upon arrival, you will find a ticket office where you need to purchase an entry ticket.

Parking: There is a designated parking area near the entrance where you can leave your vehicle or bike, or, if you prefer, you can just enter and visit the park by car or bike, there will be other parking areas near each main rock formations.

What to see in Valley of the Moon (Valle de la Luna)

This extraordinary valley boasts dramatic landscapes sculpted by wind and water over millennia. You’ll find salt flats, sand dunes, and bizarre rock formations that truly make you feel like you’re on another planet!

Opening Hours: Daily: 9:00 - 19:00, time might vary from season to season.

Access: You can explore Moon Valley by car, bike, or on foot. Driving is the most convenient option, especially if you want to visit multiple sites within the valley.

Inside Valley of the Moon, there are many amazing views and rock formations and it is easy to get lost here, so we are going to suggest a few that you must see (and photograph!)!

Once in there, don't worry, grab one of their detailed maps and follow the directions for the rock formations as they are provided at the entrance of Moon Valley, signage within the park is generally good. If you’re unsure, local guides and park staff are always happy to help point you in the right direction.

1. Las Tres Marías

These three towering rock formations are iconic and easy to notice once you're near their location. Standing tall amidst the desert backdrop, they are a must-see for any Valley of the Moon visitor.

2. Duna Mayor

For those who love a bit of a hike, Duna Mayor offers a short but rewarding climb with only 1km each way. From the top, you’ll get panoramic views of the valley – perfect for those Insta-worthy shots! Duna Mayor Hike is moderate in difficulty as it involves climbing a steep dune, which can be challenging due to the shifting sand, it can take about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Out-of-the-World Activities: Sandboarding

For the adventurous, sandboarding down the dunes is a thrilling way to experience the landscape. Rentals often come with the option of a brief introductory lesson. If you're new to sandboarding, it’s a good idea to take the lesson. Tours that include transport, equipment, and a guide are also available.

Cost: Around $10 to $20 USD for a half-day.
